“Ju Raku En” is a Japanese term which means “enjoying peace and longevity in a public place.” This also is the name given to a Japanese garden developed and maintained by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and the Toowoomba Regional Council.
This award-winning Japanese Garden is the largest and most authentic Japanese designed garden in Australia. The “Ju Raku En” Japanese Garden is located at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
The “Ju Raku En” Japanese Garden covers an area of 4 acres and showcases a Zen-like landscape. This Japanese Garden is more than just an exhibit artificial forests and hills as or rocks grouped together by the water.

The gardens surround a central lake with traditional Japanese red bridges. The bridges connect three islands which are popular picnic grounds and wedding photo locations. Swimming in the lake are fish, ducks and turtles.
Many families visit these gardens regardless of the season to enjoy peace and longevity. It is a common sight to see children feeding the animals in the lake with bread. It is also common for artists to sit in one corner and quietly paint a scene.
The Ju Raku En Garden looks exceptionally amazing during The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers every September.
The Ju Raku En” Japanese Garden was designed by Professor Kinsaku Nakane, a world renowned master of Japanese garden designs. It has been open to the public since 1989.
