<A heritage listed theater since May 31, 1994, the Empire Theatre at the Empire Theatre Complex 56 Neil St, Toowoomba, Queensland, is part of the wonderful history of the city of Toowoomba.
The Newport Park and Queensland State Rose Garden was initiated in 1999 by three businessmen who presented the Toowoomba Regional Council with a Tourism Growth Plan. The plan centered on creating an International Standard Rose Garden in a portion of the Newport park.The Empire Theater is the largest theater in regional Australia. It features modern seating amenities and has a 1565 seating capacity. It has received numerous commendations from theatre-goers as well as artists in the performing arts.
Located in 147 Taylor Street, Newtown, the Newtown Park covers an area of 30 acres and is one of the premiere parks in Toowoomba.The Empire Theater was built in 1911. After burning down, it was rebuilt in 1933. In 1997, it was restored and reopened to the public. The theater has been an important part in the development of the culture and arts in the area. It has for decades been the entertainment center for Toowoomba residents.
Inside the Newport Park is the Queensland State Rose Garden, a barbecue area, a children’s playground and a sports oval with cricket pitches and croquet lawns.The Empire Theaters boasts of fine architecture and a rich history. It features an art deco style similar to the glory days of Hollywood. Palm trees frame the exterior of the building. The foyer features two bronze and metallic gold plinth-mounted fish tanks.
The Queensland State Rose Garden includes a collection of over 2000 roses in different varieties selected from the hybrid tea, floribunda, David Austin and the climbing roses varieties. Climbing roses deck archways and swags and special varieties grow through unique structures.The grand proscenium arch is the theater’s most prominent feature.
Included also are the Alister Clark Rose Collection, Heritage Roses in Australia Collection as well as other commemorative and heritage rose varieties.Every element of the theater has been restored to its original grandeur including the grand proscenium arch , With an increasing number of rose enthusiasts and the growing interests on roses in Toowoomba as well as in the surrounding areas, the Queensland State Rose Garden has become a central meeting place for research and discussion about the various rose varieties.art-deco style lighting, the foyer’s original brick walls, and the decorative sconces.
The roses can be seen from October to April however they are in full bloom in October and November.To live up to modern times, the glass towers have been added to the original building to accommodate two levels of complementary foyers. The foyers come complete with bars and lounging areas.
