Preston Peak Wines was established by Ashley Smith and Kym Thumpkin, both Toowoomba dentists, in 1994. The wines were initially sold from Wyberba in the Granite Belt.
Preston Peak Wines are produced at an altitude of 860 on the Devil’s Elbow vineyard at Wyberba in the Granite Belt of Queensland. It has been the vision of the owners to produce wines cool-climate wines.
The vineyard started with mostly Chardonnay. Today, Preston Peak Wines has over 26 different varieties of grapes including old time favorites Chardonnay Cabernet, and Shiraz as well as other varieties including Carmenere, Mataro, Sagrantino, Verdelho, and Viognie.
Since the first barrel ferment of the Chardonnay was awarded the gold medal at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 1997, Preston Peak Wines has won over 300 awards.
The most prestigious award Preston Peak Wines have won was the 2008 Reserve Shiraz wherein it was judged as one of the Top Five Shiraz of Australia and New Zealand in the Winestate Wine of the Year awards.
In 1999 the owners opened the Preston Peak Wines Cellar Door. It has since become a favorite destination of local residents and visitors. The Cellar Door sells good quality wine and platters of cheese and offers free wine tasting.
The Preston Peak Wines Cellar Door is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 3pm for any functions, including conferences and weddings.
Preston Peak Wines is located 430 Preston Boundary Road, Preston South East Queensland, and is 10 minutes away from the south of Toowoomba. The winery offers a stunning view vineyards, Table Top Mountain, and Lockyer Valley.
